Plumbers face flush

Plumbers are being targeted as part of a tax evasion campaign.

West Midlands-based plumber David Williams received a twelve month sentence for evading a total of £91,000 over the course of ten years working on a self-employed basis.

Plumbers were the target of a 2011 campaign by HMRC to investigate those evading tax, with nine other plumbers currently under arrest. Williams was discovered due to the thousands of pounds he kept in cash in his house that he was unable to account for.

For those looking to make a voluntary disclosure, HMRC has a form available here. The benefits of making a self disclosure include the likelihood that a criminal prosecution will not be sought as well as a lower penalty on any tax owed.
